The Graphic Scores Journey, by and with Josep-Maria Balanyà
The pianist and composer Josep-Maria Balanyà has been writing graphic scores since 1992. He combines orthodox musical writing with graphics and drawings. He gives also open parts to improvisation, either free or based on pre-established elements.
Graphic Scores Journey is a project created in 2022 that consists of a solo piano performance and the simultaneous projection of graphic scores in video format.
The interaction between music and video is constant, the music accompanies the video and vice versa, but the image does not always correspond to what is heard. This way, the audience is not subject to strictly following the score while one is listening nor vice versa, but rather one can follow one's eyes or one's ears or both at one's discretion, and enjoy this journey.
